Return of the Kings, the unlinked (! seriously that didn't ring any alarm bells? God damn Sasse) source of this quote are self-proclaimed reactionaries, not MRA. Less tabloidy blogs than the Mary Sue had at least the decency to issue an correction of this fuckup:

  2. The bryndenbfish essay is very good. Much of what he sees in the text I never would have noticed myself. But the idea that someone who singlehandedly bent the arc of the world away from slavery could become a villain is somewhat mind-boggling to me. (Obviously she will be seen as a villain by some, so I should say the idea that GRRM would see/write her that way is mind-boggling.) I find the author's contention (as detailed in another series of essays) that a peace with Yunkai that allows the slave trade to continue is worth preserving actually kind of upsetting as well.

I dunno, I think the history of my own country (the US) shows that there is no easy way to end slavery and keep everyone happy when it is so deeply ensconced in the economy and culture. We're still dealing with aftereffects of Lincoln's actions 150 years later, and will be for the foreseeable future, and we would be even if the Civil War had somehow been avoided.

    1. I guess the argument is that Dany is becoming Sherman rather than Lincoln.
